James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The Sherman Oaks Owner’s Guide
James Hardie does not manufacture driveway pavers or hardscape products. What Sherman Oaks homeowners encounter is James Hardie siding, trim, or soffit installed adjacent to driveway and paver systems, where the interface between fiber-cement cladding and ground-level hardscape fails from water intrusion, settlement, or improper detailing. We stock and install the transition flashings, Z-bar drip edges, and fiber-cement trim pieces that make this joint watertight; typical repair runs $800-$2,500 installed, and we carry the compatible HardieTrim and flashing profiles on our trucks.
Most owners in Sherman Oaks notice the problem after winter rains or when pressure washing the driveway. Water wicks up the siding, stain appears at the base course, or the Hardie panel starts to delaminate where it meets the pavers. The gap between hardscape and cladding was either too tight, lacked proper clearance above grade, or the sealant joint aged out in the Valley heat.
Which James Hardie Products This Interface Involves
James Hardie makes fiber-cement siding, not pavers. The failure point is always the transition zone. In Sherman Oaks, we see this most often with HardiePlank lap siding, HardiePanel vertical siding, or HardieTrim boards running down to concrete or paver surfaces. The critical spec is clearance: Hardie requires minimum 6 inches above finished grade for plank siding, 2 inches above hardscape for trim, and a 1/4-inch gap at the termination with back-sealed edges. Most failures we diagnose in the Valley violate one of these three rules.
To identify your exact trim profile, check the back side of any removed piece for the stamped product code, or measure the face dimension. HardieTrim comes in 4/4 (3/4-inch actual), 5/4 (1-inch actual), and 6/4 (1-1/4-inch actual) thicknesses, with widths from 2-1/2 inches to 11-1/4 inches. The older “HZ5” product line for wet climates is occasionally found in Sherman Oaks from spec-house builds in the 2010s; current stock is HZ10, formulated for our dry, hot cycles. We stock both profiles and the color-matched ColorPlus touch-up pens, since the factory finish on replacement pieces rarely matches sun-faded existing siding exactly.
OEM James Hardie trim and flashings are what we install. Aftermarket fiber-cement exists, but the density, paint adhesion, and warranty compatibility do not match. We quote the Hardie part by name so you know what you’re getting.
Signs Your James Hardie-to-Hardscape Interface Is Failing

- Staining or darkening at the base course. Water is getting behind the siding at the ground contact point. In Sherman Oaks, this often follows a winter rain after months of baked-in sealant shrinkage. The stain means the drainage plane is compromised and the WRB (water-resistive barrier, the housewrap or felt behind the siding) is wet.
- Soft or crumbling lower edge of trim board. Hardie trim is fiber-cement, not wood, but it will wick water if the bottom edge isn’t back-sealed or if it sits in contact with pavers. The edge swells, the paint bubbles, and eventually the material frizzes. We’ve replaced trim on homes near the Galleria corridor where sprinkler overspray accelerated this by years.
- Gaps opening between siding and driveway or paver edge. Settlement in the San Fernando Valley’s expansive clay soils pulls hardscape away from the structure. The original sealant bead stretches and tears. Once the gap exceeds 3/8 inch, water and pests have a direct path.
- Efflorescence or white powder on the Hardie surface near grade. This is mineral deposit from water migrating through the material and evaporating at the surface. It means bulk water is hitting the siding regularly, usually from a misdirected downspout or negative slope toward the house.
- Paint peeling in a horizontal band 6-12 inches above the driveway. Not sun failure, which shows as alligatoring on south and west walls. This pattern is splashback, where driveway water hits the siding repeatedly. The ColorPlus finish is rated for wet-dry cycling, but not for constant saturation at the base.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For the James Hardie-to-hardscape transition repair in Sherman Oaks, our installed pricing runs $800-$2,500 depending on linear feet of interface, whether we replace trim only or also remove and reflash siding courses, and whether the WRB behind needs patching. A typical 20-foot garage door flank with two courses of HardiePlank removed, Z-bar flashing installed, new HardieTrim cut and sealed, and sealant joint to the concrete is $1,400-$1,800.
Every quote is flat and written before work starts, per Clause 1 of the Haven Standard. The price includes removal of damaged material, installation of new James Hardie product with factory-matched or best-available finish, compatible corrosion-resistant fasteners, back-sealing of all cut edges with Hardie’s specified primer, and a continuous bead of polyurethane sealant at the hardscape joint. We pull no permits for trim repair, but if your HOA requires documentation, we photograph every stage and deliver the record with the invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; James Hardie’s 30-year limited product warranty covers the material itself.
Here’s how the pricing breaks for common scopes:
| Scope | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Trim board replacement only (up to 20 LF) | $800-$1,200 |
| Trim + siding course removal, flashing, replace | $1,400-$2,200 |
| Full reflash with WRB repair, multiple walls | $2,000-$2,500 |
DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: confirm the gap between your Hardie trim and the hardscape with a tape measure. If it’s under 1/4 inch or direct contact, that’s your problem documented. Look for the stamped product code on any loose piece to confirm your trim thickness. Check your downspout discharge; water should run away from the house, not across the driveway toward the wall.
Where DIY goes wrong: cutting fiber-cement without a HEPA vacuum and proper blade generates silica dust, which is a documented respiratory hazard. The California Department of Public Health regulates this; we use Festool track saws with dust extraction on every cut. More critically, removing siding courses to install head flashing requires understanding the drainage plane sequence. Get it backward and you trap water instead of shedding it. We’ve been called to Sherman Oaks homes where a well-intentioned owner sealed the gap with silicone, which is non-permeable and guaranteed to rot the sheathing behind.
Measure twice, write it down, then build it. If the repair involves more than a single trim board and caulk, call us at (213) 221-0788 and we’ll put the scope and price in writing before anyone touches a tool.
FAQs
Properly installed with correct clearance and back-sealed edges, Hardie trim lasts 25-30 years. In Sherman Oaks, we see premature failure at 8-12 years when the original installer missed the grade clearance spec or skipped edge sealing. The Valley’s 100-degree summer cycles and occasional winter saturation are hard on any detail that was borderline to start. Call (213) 221-0788 for a free inspection if you’re unsure of your clearance.
Once the edge has swollen or frizzed, no. Fiber-cement does not dry back to its original dimension like wood might. Surface paint failure can sometimes be sanded and touched back if the substrate is sound, but the labor to feather and match usually exceeds replacement on a per-foot basis. We quote both options when the damage is marginal. Call (213) 221-0788 and we’ll show you the photo record so you can decide.
Most single-wall Hardie-to-hardscape repairs in Sherman Oaks are one day. Two days if we need to match a discontinued ColorPlus shade and order from the factory, or if the WRB repair extends beyond the immediate area. We don’t quote speed; we quote completion with the photo record delivered. Under Clause 1, the price and timeline are both in writing before work starts.
We carry the common HardieTrim widths, Z-bar and drip-edge flashings in galvanized and painted steel, and the full range of ColorPlus touch-up pens on every truck serving Sherman Oaks. Less common widths or special-order colors take 3-5 business days from the City of Industry distribution center. We’ll tell you exactly what’s in stock when we write the quote, not after you’ve signed.
