Heritage Series units, common in Sherman Oaks homes built between 2005 and 2015, use a 5/8-inch diameter coil balance with a stamped steel shoe; Estate Series moved to a 3/4-inch balance and a die-cast zinc shoe after 2016. To identify your part, check the etched code in the glass corner (Heritage: “WB-H,” Estate: “WB-E,” Aspire: “WB-A”) or remove the sash and photograph the balance shoe profile. The critical spec is the sash weight, stamped on the balance itself or calculable from glass thickness: single-pane runs 4-5 pounds per square foot, dual-pane 6-8 pounds, and low-E triple-pane in newer Sherman Oaks builds can hit 10 pounds. Get this wrong and the window drifts or slams.

There’s a short list of checks that won’t make things worse. Verify the sash is fully seated in the track. Look for debris in the sill track that blocks closure. Check that the keeper screws haven’t backed out. These take five minutes and a Phillips head.

What goes wrong fast: removing a tilt-wash sash without supporting the balance springs, which can unwind with enough force to crack the jamb or cut a hand. Re-tensioning a coil balance requires a specific winding tool and a brake to hold the tension while you clip the new balance in. Multi-point door locks need precise keeper alignment to within 1/16 inch, or the deadbolt binds and the mechanism strips in months.
